  2.    For HP 3000 Series 900 Computer Systems Product Number 36922A
  3. The NS Point-to-Point Network Link for MPE/XL-based systems provides
  4. the network connection for an HP 3000 Series 900 computer to
  5. communicate with another HP 3000, MPE/XL- or MPE/V-based system.
  6. Customers can connect HP 3000s using NS Point-to-Point with either a
  7. leased line or switched auto-dial line. Customers with direct-connect
  8. configurations or requirements should use the LAN links.

  12. Features
  13. o Implements industry-standard Defense Advanced Research Projects
  14.   Agency (DARPA) TCP/IP protocols from the transport and network layers
  15.   of the OSI Reference Model.
  16. o Provides packet routing for transport access over multiple nodes.
  17. o Provides gateway capability for transparent access between networks.
  18. o Includes integrated node management software for on-line
  19.   configuration and logging.
  20. o Provides programmatic access so users can write distributed
  21.   applications between HP 3000s. The Network InterProcess Communication
  22.   (NetIPC) intrinsics provide this programmatic interface.
  23. o Provides access to higher level services such as Virtual Terminal,
  24.   Network File Transfer, Remote Process Management, Remote Database
  25.   Access, and Remote File Access when used in conjunction with
  26.   NS3000/XL Network Services (P/N 36920A).
  27. o Supports LAPB protocol, an OSI standard for full-duplex line
  28.   communication.

  30. Functional Description
  31. This product can be used in conjunction with NS3000/XL Network Services
  32. Software (P/N 36920A), or it can be used as a standalone link with
  33. user-written applications by using the NetIPC intrinsics. The NS3000/XL
  34. Network Services software provides the user-level services to perform
  35. functions such as Network File Transfer, Virtual Terminal, Network File
  36. Access, and Remote Process Management. The programmatic access via the
  37. set of NetIPC intrinsics allows customers to write their own
  38. distributed applications on different nodes to exchange information in
  39. an efficient, peer-to-peer manner.
  40.    With NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL customers' networks can be connected
  41. in a way that is transparent to users and allows high connectivity
  42. between networks. For example, a transparent gateway can be configured
  43. between a point-to-point network and a LAN. Consequently, users on the
  44. point-to-point network would be able to transparently access resources
  45. on the LAN, and LAN users would be able to transparently access
  46. resources on the point-to-point network.
  47.    Users do not need to know the network topology. This transparency
  48. means that the user simply specifies the destination node name for
  49. access to another CPU on the same network or for access to a remote CPU
  50. on a different network.
  51.    NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link (utilizing the LAPB protocol
  52. only) is supported to work with all full duplex auto-dial modems which
  53. work with the DS Point-to-Point Modem Link or the NS Point-to-Point
  54. 3000/V Network Link in full duplex mode.
  55.    The following is a list of full duplex modems which have been
  56. verified by HP to work with the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link
  57. utilizing the LAPB protocol:

  66. The following modem support is provided with NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL

  76. Product Components
  77.    Hardware
  78. NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link includes the hardware interface
  79. card and 5-meter cable for connection to the user's modem. Users with
  80. direct connect configurations or requirements should use HP LAN Links.
  81. The hardware interface is the Programmable Serial Interface (PSI) card.
  82. The PSI microprocessor utilizes all of the communication data link
  83. protocol, thus relieving the HP 3000 of that task. The PSI architecture
  84. accommodates line speeds from 1200 bps to 64 Kbps.
  85.    Software
  86. NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link provides the OSI level 2
  87. Standard, LAPB Protocol. LAPB provides full-duplex transmission,
  88. thereby eliminating line turn-around time.
  89.    The network transport software, TCP/IP, implements the de facto
  90. industry standard DARPA TCP/IP protocols. TCP/IP follows the OSI
  91. Reference Model specifying the transport and network layers.
  92.  
  93. Product Requirements
  94. o An HP 3000 Series 900
  95. o A single mid-bus slot
  96. o At least 16 Mbytes (24 or more are recommended) of memory. See your
  97.   HP System Engineer to help determine your requirements.
  98. o Leased line or switched auto-dial line
  99. o Full-duplex modems
  100.  
  101. Migration from DS Point-to-Point and NS Point-to-Point 3000/V
  102. The NS Links and Services are HP's new generation of communication
  103. products providing enhanced capabilities over that of the DS Links and
  104. Services. Customers with DS products currently installed are encouraged
  105. to migrate their networks to the NS product line. When planning this
  106. migration, both services and link products need to be considered.
  107.    User applications written using DS services will run with little
  108. modification under NS3000/XL Network Services. Customers need to be
  109. aware that program-to-program communication (PTOP) is not supported in
  110. the MPE/XL environment. Customers whose applications use PTOP are
  111. strongly encouraged to move to the newer, more efficient NetIPC
  112. environment for MPE/XL user applications. The NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL
  113. Link can be added to networks that currently include DS link products.
  114. In order for DS nodes to communicate with NS/XL nodes, the DS node will
  115. have to go through an intermediate  NS/V node. Customers are urged to
  116. migrate their DS nodes to NS/V nodes to eliminate networking confusion
  117. and to enhance performance.
  118.    The NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link product conforms to
  119. layers 1 through 4 of the OSI seven-layer model. The DS Link product
  120. predates the OSI model and, therefore, has a different architecture
  121. from the NS Link product. As a consequence of these architectural
  122. differences, DS/3000 Point-to-Point and NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL
  123. cannot communicate with each other.
  124.    It is recommended that users establish a migration plan with an
  125. HP Network Consultant or Datacom Specialist.
  126.  
  127. Installation and Configuration Policy
  128. The customer is responsible for loading the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL
  129. Network Link software onto the system. Hewlett-Packard will install the
  130. Programmable Serial Interface (PSI) and provide connection to the
  131. customer's communication line (provided the line is available at
  132. installation), and will perform minimum configuration of the NS
  133. Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link in order to verify minimum product
  134. functionality. These activities are included in the product purchase
  135. price.
  136.  
  137. Customer Responsibility
  138. Prior to having HP personnel on-site to install the PSI and perform
  139. minimum configuration of the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link,
  140. the customer is responsible for the following:
  141. o Providing HP with the information necessary to complete the Network
  142.   Implementation and Support Plan (NISP) including:
  143.    -  System configurations
  144.    -  Logical network map identifying relevant traffic flow
  145.    -  Physical network map identifying relevant network hardware
  146.       components
  147. o Installing and verifying modems and phone lines for communication
  148.   between HP 3000 systems using the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network
  149.   Link
  150. o Obtaining a valid IP address prior to the configuration of the NS
  151.   Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link
  152. o Updating the HP 3000 system to the proper release level and
  153.   installing the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link software using
  154.   AUTOINST. Refer to the HP 3000 MPE/XL Installation and Update Manual
  155.   (36123-90001)
  156. o Verifying that all of the necessary software modules have been
  157.   successfully installed by AUTOINST and are at the correct version
  158.   levels using the NMMAINT.PUB.SYS utility
  159. o Performing full system backups (as necessary) and ensuring that the
  160.   HP 3000 system and personnel with HP 3000 system management knowledge
  161.   and networking knowledge are available when HP is on-site to complete
  162.   the installation and minimum configuration of the NS Point-to-Point
  163.   3000/XL Network Link
  164.    The customer is also responsible for completing the configuration in
  165. order to fully integrate the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link
  166. into the existing customer network after HP has completed the minimum
  167. configuration of the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link.
  168.  
  169. HP Responsibility
  170. Following the installation of the software component of the NS
  171. Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link, HP is responsible for the
  172. following:
  173. o Installing, verifying, and connecting the Programmable Serial
  174.   Interface (PSI) card for the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link
  175.   to the customer's modem.
  176. o Confirming that all of the necessary software modules have been
  177.   installed and are at the correct version level.
  178. o Configuring the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link to a minimum
  179.   default configuration necessary to verify the software and hardware
  180.   functionality. This includes configuring the link and Network
  181.   Interface (NI) in the network configuration file (NMCONFIG) using the
  182.   NMMGR utility and cross-validating the PSI related configuration with
  183.   the system configuration.
  184. o Verifying the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link configuration by
  185.   issuing the NETCONTROL (and NSCONTROL, if applicable) start command
  186.   for the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link, NI, and ensuring that
  187.   a connection can be established with another HP 3000 system using
  188.   this new NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link.
  189.    These steps complete HP's portion of the installation and minimum
  190. configuration of the NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link.
  191.  
  192. Addition Implementation Assistance
  193. For implementation needs that go beyond installation, the customer can
  194. either provide self-support, or can purchase additional services from
  195. HP. These services include Network Startup and HP ConsultLine. In
  196. addition, the customer can also purchase service from HP on a
  197. time-and-materials basis.
  198.    Network Startup includes implementation scheduling and coordination
  199. assistance, network configuration and verification testing, and network
  200. documentation.

  203. The NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Link may be used as a standalone product
  204. with intrinsic access, or with NS3000/XL Network Services (P/N 36920A).
